Nail biting. More than a habit
Onychophagia, also known as nail biting, can cause several health problems:
Infections:Constant biting of the nails and the surrounding skin can cause small wounds that are susceptible to infection. This can lead to nail bed inflammation and, in severe cases, even bone inflammation
Tooth damage: Biting your nails can wear down your teeth and lead to gum disease
Psychological stress:Onychophagia is often associated with stress, anxiety or other mental health problems. It can be a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder or an impulse control disorder
Aesthetic problems: Bitten nails and damaged cuticles not only look unsightly, but can also affect self-confidence
Long-term damage: Chronic nail biting can cause permanent damage to the nails and cuticles, which can affect nail growth.
